At Garden Buildings Direct we supply a vast range of garden buildings, from the small storage units to the BillyOh Village Hall Log Cabin – which is a huge 5.5m x 4m x 3.5m! When people tell us that it only just fits in their gardens we can empathise; we couldn’t actually fit it any of our gardens or our small studio in order to create a video for it.
So the BillyOh team had to think outside the box slightly.
The BillyOh Village Hall Log Cabin Video – the process
We have a fantastic team of product designers who can create extremely realistic CGI models as a byproduct of their design process. So the BillyOh team decided to get clever with some green fabric (for removing the background); a protractor (for camera angles); a tape measure (for scale); some of the yard lights (to make sure the green colour was nice and uniform); and our little handicam (for well … filming it all). We wanted to see if we could create the feel of being in one of these awesome buildings, despite not being able to put one up.
We had to be quick because the space we had available wasn’t free for long, so we’d planned out how we were going to work it, what was going to be real and what was going to be CGI. We dragged all the gear in there, set the camera up at (what we hoped was) the perfect angle and started filming, while the designers create the images for the background.
We did a quick day of shooting with numerous set changes, and then spent the rest of the day hoping the whole thing would work when we stuck it together the following day.
We believe it worked well. The video is now live, and having subsequently been in a real Village Hall Log Cabin I think it gives a very good impression of what’s it’s like to be in such a big garden building.
